EAPPI (Esomeprazole Acid) is a medication used to treat acid-related heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the most serious form of stomach acid production. It is sold under a variety of brand names such as Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Prevacid Mag, and others.
EAPPI works by stopping the production of acid in the stomach. It can cause heartburn symptoms like heartburn that persist for more than four hours.
“EAPPI has been shown to be effective for many patients, including those with reflux symptoms,” said Dr. John D. Miller, chair of the University of Wisconsin Health System’s College of Pharmacy and the director of the University of Wisconsin Heartburn Symptom Center. “It’s also important to use it as directed by your doctor.”
EAPPI was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1996.
EAPPI was approved for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in 1995.
It is a proton pump inhibitor that blocks the production of acid in the stomach. It is usually taken orally for about four to six hours before meals. It can be taken once daily, with or without food, and is effective up to 14 days after the last dose.
The drug was designed as a proton pump inhibitor because it works by blocking the acid in the stomach.
“EAPPI is a medication that was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for GERD, and it is one of the most effective medications for treating acid-related heartburn and the symptoms of the condition,” said Miller. “When used as directed, it can have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients.”
A recent study found that patients taking esomeprazole and PPIs experienced significantly fewer hospitalizations for heartburn than those taking a placebo.
The study was published in the July 11, 2012, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
“In patients with heartburn, the improvement in symptom control is thought to be related to the relaxation of the stomach’s acid-fighting mechanisms,” said Miller. “It is important to note that GERD is the most common form of heartburn, and the symptoms of the condition may improve with the addition of a proton pump inhibitor.”
According to the American Heartburn Society, the most common symptoms for heartburn patients were heartburn at night and acid reflux, which is the narrowing of the esophagus.
Researchers at Wisconsin’s Northwestern University Medical School and the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, Wisconsin, found that PPIs were associated with fewer hospitalizations for heartburn than those taking a placebo.
The researchers looked at data from more than 300 patients who had had heartburn for at least two months and who had been prescribed a drug for reflux for six months or more. The researchers looked at data from patients who were prescribed esomeprazole and a proton pump inhibitor for six months or more.
“Based on this study, we hypothesized that the use of proton pump inhibitors in patients with heartburn and acid reflux may be associated with a lower risk of heartburn,” said Miller.
The researchers found that using proton pump inhibitors was associated with fewer hospitalizations for heartburn than taking a placebo. The researchers also found that patients who took the drug had fewer hospitalizations for GERD than those taking the drug alone.
“There are a number of potential mechanisms by which PPIs reduce acid production,” said Miller.
“These findings raise questions about the safety and efficacy of these medications for patients with heartburn.”
The study was led by Miller, who is director of the Department of Dermatology at Wisconsin’s Northwestern University Medical School.
In a separate study, the researchers compared the safety and efficacy of PPIs to those taking a placebo for the treatment of GERD. They also looked at data from more than 300 patients who had been prescribed a drug for reflux for six months or more.
What is Reflux?
Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (“foodpipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause you symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest rising up to your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
Do I get instant relief from taking a Nexium tablet?
Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
How much to take• The recommended dose is one tablet a day. • Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don’t feel an improvement immediately. • You may need to take the tablets for 2 or 3 days in a row before your reflux symptoms (for example, heartburn and acid regurgitation) get better. • The treatment length is up to 14 days. • When your reflux symptoms have completely gone you should stop taking this medicine. • If your reflux symptoms get worse or do not improve after taking this medicine for 14 days in a row, you should consult a doctor. If you have persistent or longstanding, frequently recurring symptoms even after treatment with this medicine, you should contact your doctor. Taking this medicine • You can take your tablet at any time of the day either with food or on an empty stomach. • Swallow your tablet whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. This is because the tablet contains coated pellets, which stop the medicine from being broken down by the acid in your stomach. It is important not to damage the pellets.
Alternative method of taking this medicine• Put the tablet in a glass of still (non-fizzy) water. Do not use any other liquids. • Stir until the tablet breaks up (the mixture will not be clear) then drink the mixture straight away or within 30 minutes. Always stir the mixture just before drinking it. • To make sure that you have drunk all of the medicine, rinse the glass very well with half a glass of water and drink it. The solid pieces contain the medicine – do not chew or crush them
